St. Mary’s Hospital was built in 1927 by a group of Trappist monks who arrived in South Africa in 1882. The monks appealed to women in their home parishes in Europe for assistance and five women responded who formed the foundation of the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood. On the 01st October 2017, the hospital was taken over by the KZN Department of Health.

It is situated in Pinetown, just off the N3 highway, in the outer district of Ethekwini Municipality in KwaZulu –Natal province. It is a 200-bed, Level 1 District Hospital, serving a population of approximately 1 million and acts as a referral Hospital for about 16 provincial and municipal primary healthcare clinics as well as 2 community health centres (CHCs).

The staff was rude. Telling my wife that I can't be with her. That our child might be in distress meantime while doing a scan at private ultrasound place. Our child was healthy and in no distress. I feel like they were homophobic. I'd rather go to another place. Its a dangerous area to boot. They don't understand social anxiety nor seperation anxiety. I'm deeply disappointed.

If you are someone caught where you don't have medical aid and are going to have a baby just like my wife and I did the thought of a government hospital is scary. What I can genuinely tell you is st Mary's is the absolute best option you have for a government hospital . My wife was in labour for over 45 hours until it had to be moved to an emergency c section. The staff in the labour ward were amazing and extremely experienced they tried everything but unfortunately our baby was just too stubborn and c section become absolutely necessary. The hospital is clean and have doctors and nurses that are extremely experienced. Just one afternoon spent there I witnessed atleast 5 successfull births take place. Great option if private is not an option you will be in good hands.

I write this letter of appreciation from the bottom of my heart to the St Marys Hospital Medical fraternity starting , from doctors to the nursing fraternity that attended to my son who was an emergency case on the morning of 21 December 2024. My son was mugged early hours of the morning and had bled profusely. St Marys seemed the nearest hospital for his survival. When I got there the medical staff were taking rounds. On seeing our situation they attended to him immediately. They only made me do his card after. The team work, the holistic Bato Pele, that I witnessed there , humbled me even more to understand what it means to have a calling and serve with passion to ones mission. When I say holistic , its truly that, as my sister and I were offered breakfast with the patients as we are also chronic senior citizens patients. I think we must have looked traumatized ourselves not aware. May I just name the few that I made sure I get the names to thank them and hope our hounourable MEC Nomagugu gets to know about such efficieny of Sr Buthelezi,Sr Ngcobo,Sr Makhowana,Sr Nkonzo not to forget the Doctor who was at Casuaty at the time. Thank you to the efficient management. My son got a referral letter to RK Khan and is healing well. May God bless you all abundantly . A prosperous 2025 throughout filled with good tidings for yourselves and families . Much appreciated Mrs Nontuthuko Phungula

My mom spent 3 and a half weeks in Marion wing. I cannot speak highly enough of this hospital, the staff were amazing, the hospital is clean and well looked after. The doctors are attentive and take the time to speak to family and keep them updated. My mom has visited more than 1 government hospital in KZN and St. Mary's is by far the absolute Gold Standard in the government healthcare system. Well done St. Mary's, you are an absolute shining star for patients that are experiencing some of the worst times in their lives.
